Ferroxx: New Molluscicide For Commercial Users

April 15, 2011—Neudorff is pleased to announce the introduction of its new slug and snail bait, Ferroxx, to the US commercial markets. Ferroxx contains the new active ingredient sodium ferric EDTA at 5%, which has a specific, physiologically selective mode of action that inhibits the unique oxygen transport system characteristic of slugs and snails. Because of this selectivity, Ferroxx can be used around pets and wildlife, and will not harm beneficial species such as honeybees, ladybird beetles or earthworms. With its superior efficacy, Ferroxx is an exciting advance in the control of pest slugs and snails, as it is a replacement for metaldehyde, which was first registered with the EPA in 1967.

Ferroxx plays an important role in the grower’s efforts to ensure a safe food supply. Ferroxx is exempt from residue tolerances; therefore its use is compliant with pesticide-related Food Safety standards and Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). Ferroxx does not present a risk to surface or groundwaters, and target pests do not pose any risk of secondary injury, making Ferroxx an ideal component in any grower’s stewardship program and removing any concern about farm water contamination. Ferroxx has low mammalian toxicity and so presents a very low risk to applicators, handlers, fieldworkers, and neighbors.

Ferroxx is produced as a small, natural-colored, rain-fast pellet of uniform size. This characteristic, carefully controlled in Neudorff’s own manufacturing plant, ensures that Ferroxx presents the pest with the maximum number of feeding points per pound and per acre, ensuring effective pest population reduction. Ferroxx has demonstrated superior efficacy in trials conducted by Dr. Mohammad Bari of the Artichoke Research Association, Buzz Uber of Crop Inspection Services, and the noted agronomist David Holden of Camarillo, CA. Ferroxx also has a distinct advantage by virtue of its highly selective mode of action in that it does not kill the pest by dehydration and so eliminates the risk of pest recovery in cool or moist conditions. Ferroxx also inhibits pest feeding immediately, ensuring effective plant protection.

Ferroxx is registered for a broad range of crops, and the rate for all uses is 5-20 pounds per acre. Ferroxx is in stock in California for immediate distribution, packaged in 50-pound bags, 36 bags per pallet.

Neudorff develops and markets a full line of plant protection products including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.
